Vivo X50 - A Smartphone that's hard to recommend

After all the hype, Vivo finall launched their X50 Series of smartphones in India on 16th July, 2020. Vivo has been the pioneer in introducing new technologies into smartphones. With the X50 Pro model it is evident that Vivo has made some phenomenal changes in terms of smartphone camera stabilization. Here we talk about the Vivo X50 has some pretty cool features for its price point. So here are all the specifications, features and price of the new Vivo X50.

Design and Display

Vivo X50 comes with a premium design with a frosted glass back made of a material called AG Matte Glass and the phone has an aluminium frame. This frosted glass back gives a premium feel while holding the phone in hand and it also attracts less fingerprints. The phone comes with dimensions of 159.54mm*75.39mm*7.55mm and weight of 173 grams. On the front the phone has a flat screen display with a punch hole cutout for the front camera. Vivo calls it the Flat Ultra O Screen. The bezels and the chin around the display are considerably minimal enhancing the overall premium look of the phone.

Coming to the display, Vivo X50 comes with an AMOLED display with 87.0% screen-to-body ratio. It's a 6.56 inch full HD+ (2376 x 1080) display with 90 Hz refresh rate,180 Hz response rate and pixel density of 398 ppi. The display not only is crisp and colorful but also is extremely smooth thanks to that 90 Hz refresh rate. The display also supports HDR10+ so you can enjoy watching your favorite movies and series.

Performance

Under the hood Vivo X50 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 octa-core processor based on 8nm process and Adreno 618 GPU. The phone has 8 GB RAM and comes with two UFS 2.1 storage options - 128 GB and 256 GB. Considering the price, the Snapdragon 730 processor might be a deal breaker but it gets the job done. Apps open up fairly quickly and gaming performance is also decent. The performance does take a hit in some graphic-intensive games like PUBG Mobile. With 8 GB of RAM multi-tasking should not be an issue. However, the performance of this phone is a let down considering other alternatives which are available at even less price.

Camera

With all the advertising, there is no doubt that Vivo laid a huge emphasis on cameras with the X50 series. The camera performance is indeed very good. Vivo X50 comes with a quad camera setup on the back. The primary camera is a 48 megapixel f/1.6 customized Sony IMX598 sensor. However, this phone does not have that gimbal stabilization that the X50 Pro has. Apart from that, the main camera performance is nothing less than its premium counter-part. The daylight shots look crisp with plenty of details and natural colors. The low light performance is also decent as the sensor has 10% more light sensitivity than a normal sensor. The camera module also houses an 8 MP f/2.2 ultrawide angle lens with 120 degree field-of-view, a 13 MP f/2.5 camera with 2x optical zoom and a 5 MP f/2.5 macro camera. The phone supports different camera modes such as Super Night Mode, Pro Sports Mode, Slow motion, Live Photo, Time-lapse, Pro Mode etc. The camera supports video recording upto 4K @30 fps and comes with both OIS and EIS for stabilization.

On the front, just like the Vivo X50 Pro, Vivo X50 also has a punch-hole cutout which houses the 32 MP f/2.5 selfie camera. The front camera video recording maxes out at 1080p @30fps.

Battery and Other Specifications

Vivo X50 comes with a 4200 mAh battery. The phone also ships with a 33W fast charger in the box. The phone has an in-display fingerprint scanner, a single bottom firing speaker and a USB Type-C charging port. Unfortunately there is no headphone jack on this device. The phone has Hi-Res Audio Certification and also 3D Sound Tracking. Vivo X50 supports two nano sims, but it does not have expandable storage.

On the software front, Vivo X50 runs on Android 10 with Funtouch OS 10.5 on top. The phone comes in two color variants Glaze Black and Frost Blue. There are 128 GB and 256 GB storage options available.

Pricing and Verdict

Vivo X50 is priced at Rs 34,990 for the 8 GB/128 GB variant and Rs 37,990 for the 8.GB/256 GB variant. At this price point, this phone is slightly hard to recommend with the existence of the OnePlus 7T, Realme X3 or even the upcoming OnePlus Nord. But for the price you are getting a premium build quality, very good camera performance and decent battery life with pretty good fast charging. So if you are searching for a smartphone under 35k with good camera performance, Vivo X50 is a smartphone to consider. However if  you want better performance overall, its better to skip this one and consider other alternatives that we have mentioned.
